Fight the Power

Fight the Power

Released 2005

Rap was a genre I had the hardest time with, but I was determined to get it right. Too many lyrics, no real melody or progressions to speak of. I finally ended up having to break one of my "rules" and adapting the lyrics. Still, you'll see, it contains the essence of the song.

A nice side effect of recording this is I can now rap Flavor Flav's part to this song anytime I like...

Who says you can't have Lounge Rap? "Fight the Power"!

Listen, do you mind if I go first, I've got to get back to the Stock Exchange before four.
Oh sure, let you go embezzle your millions while I struggle to get by off minimum wage? <whack!>
I don't think so. Homey don't play 'dat.

Homey says do like this!
And then Homey says close your eyes like this!

1989 is the number of another summer

Get down with the sound of the funky drummer
Listen if you're missin' y'all
Singin' while I'm swingin' y'all
Giving what'cha getting knowin' what I know
While the Black band's sweatin'
And the rhythm rhymes roll

Gotta give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say

Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
You know we got to fight the powers that be

Now how do you feel about yourself?
Totally dissed, Homey!
That's why Homey don't play 'dat!

We got to pump the stuff that'll make us tough
You know that from the heart it's a start, a work of art
Revolutionize, make a change
No, nothin's strange
People we are not the same
We don't all know the game
Let's get down to business
With a little mental fitness

You gotta go bum rush the show
We gotta go for what we know
We gotta make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say...

Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
You know we got to fight the powers that be

Homey says do like this!
And then Homey says close your eyes like this!

Elvis they say was a hero to most
But he never meant a thing to me, you see
He was straight up racist, he was simple and plain
You can forget him and
You can forget John Wayne
Let's get this party started right

What we got to say what we're gonna say
Power to the people with no delay
It'll make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say...

Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
You know we got to fight the powers that be

That's just another long list of lies perpetrated by the man to keep a brother down

1989 the number, another summer (get down)
Sound of the funky drummer
Music hittin' your heart cause I know you got soul
(Brothers and sisters)
Listen if you're missin' y'all
Swingin' while I'm singin' (hey)
Givin' whatcha gettin'
Knowin' what I know
While the Black band's sweatin'
And the rhythm rhymes rollin'
Got to give us what we want (uh!)
Gotta give us what we need (hey)
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be
(Lemme hear you say)

Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
Fight the power
We got to fight the powers that be

As the rhythm designed to bounce
What counts is that the rhymes
Designed to fill your mind
Now that you've realized the prides arrived
We got to pump the stuff to make us tough
from the heart
It's a start, a work of art
To revolutionize make a change nothin's strange
People, people we are the same
No we're not the same
Cause we don't know the game
What we need is awareness, we can't get careless
You say what is this?
My beloved lets get down to business
Mental self defensive fitness
Bum rush the show
You gotta go for what you know
Make everybody see, in order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say...

Chorus

Chorus

Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant ---- to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother---- him and John Wayne
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps
Sample a look back you look and find
Nothing but rednecks for 400 years if you check
Don't worry be happy
Was a number one jam
Damn if I say it you can slap me right here
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Right on, c'mon
What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
Make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be

Chorus
